About Book

How quickly the years have passed since the first edition of Pediatric Physical Therapy was published in 1987. This is the fourth edition. It is primarily a credit to the contributors, some of whom have remained with the text through each of its four editions, that this text has become so well regarded and frequently adopted by many entry-level physical therapy programmes in the United States and overseas. The editor and other collaborators have been guided by the constant objective of providing a current description of the key topics of paediatric physical therapy for the new practitioner through each edition.

The "functional goal" is to provide paediatric care-seeking entry-level students and new practitioners with content that is supported by the literature, offers knowledge and insight within the diagnostic areas, and provides the tools by which to begin and maintain sound practise for the children with whom we work.

The book is divided into a number of sections based on the more widespread categories of illnesses that affect newborns and young children. The first chapter, which is new to the text, discusses the crucial concepts of cultural sensitivity and family-centered care. Because families are almost always involved and we frequently rely on their support and adherence to interventions, these concepts are crucial to understand when working with children. Chronological motor development is covered in chapters 2 through 7, with a focus on the biomechanical characteristics of that development. Here is an update on development tests and metrics.

The next section of the article focuses on disorders and injuries of the neurologic and neuromuscular systems. The eight chapters in this section include two new chapters, Chapter 4 (The Infant at High Risk for Developmental Delay) and Chapter 9 (Neuromuscular Disorders in Childhood: Physical Therapy Intervention), as well as one with a new title, Chapter 8 (Traumatic and Atraumatic Spinal Cord Injury in Pediatrics). Common musculoskeletal problems are covered in chapters 10 through 12, which also has one brand-new chapter. A significant addition is Chapter 13 (Traumatic Disorders and Sports Injuries), which examines a wide range of frequent ailments.

The five last chapters cover a wide range of disease categories. New writers have contributed to Chapter 15 (Pediatric Oncology) and Chapter 16 (Rehabilitation of the Child with Burns). The chapter on cardiac disorders, Chapter 17, is also new to this edition. Updates to the earlier edition are included in the other chapters.

Highlights To assist the student and the educator in focusing on certain content in the chapter, we have included thorough Chapter Outlines. In an effort to provide more in-depth information, displays have been included. This allows for more encompassing information without necessarily increasing the text of the chapters. The key material delivered in each chapter is condensed and summarised in chapter summaries. This new edition has a special feature called Nutrition Boxes. The lives of children who suffer from serious disease and injuries have improved and been enhanced over the past ten years thanks to the knowledge of the value of nutrition and the work of our colleagues in the nutritional area. Even though it's not a given that physical therapists have the resources to provide nutritional counselling, it seems that a general understanding of the dietary requirements of kids with various illnesses and disabilities can only help us better understand the significance of nutritionists' work and the needs of the kids.
