Three factors come to mind.
The screening systems used to identify active agents are in themselves highly selective. It is n o accident tha t the huma n cancers most responsive to current therapy are those that are similar to the rapidly growmg, soft-tissue mouse tumors used as primary screens. It is with choriocarcinoma, the lymphomas, Wilm's tumo r and the acute leukemias of childhood tha t the greatest successes of chemotherapy have been achieved. These cancers are in many ways analogous to transplanted murine tumors. Awareness of this factor is now fairiy general, and steps are being taken to broaden the screenmg systems.
