In the 1960s, interest in compartmentation an d the relative contribution of the different cellular an d intracellular environments to brain function led to two important an d complementary developments: the isolation an d culture of particular cell types, an d the identification of cell-specific markers. Thes e developments have enabled researchers to analyze the major cell type, the astroglial cell. Th e results have been surprising and controversial. In culture an d in situ astrocytes not only express functional receptors for neuroactive compound s but also release a numbe r of these compounds. T o substantiate the heretical notion that astrocytes actively participate in neuropharmacology has demanded proof that receptor activation evokes discrete change s in astrocyte biology. In response to this demand , appreciation of the functional roles of astrocytes in the nervous system has broadened, an d these once neglected cells are now proposed to play key roles in events as diverse as neuronal survival, regulation of blood flow, an d memory. Th e purpose of this book is to relate function to astrocyte pharmacology.
